The Client

The University of Kansas Center for Community Health and Development—owners and operators of the “Community Tool Box,” a globally accessed public-service platform dedicated to community health and development information.

The Client

The Challenge

The platform was built on Drupal 7, which was approaching its End of Life (EOL). The university needed a timely upgrade to ensure continued stability and security.

The project required support for right-to-left languages (Arabic, Farsi), including font nuances and translation integrity—Drupal 7’s translation structure had inconsistencies, leading to unlinked translations in some cases.

Integration of external systems like Qualtrics with Drupal Webforms had to be maintained seamlessly as part of the migration.

The upgrade needed to be completed within tight deadlines, limiting the scope for iterative design revisions.

The Solution

The following solution has been delivered within the project with our partner Brainsum’s Drupal expertise:

  • An upgrade from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10, including a minor modernised design facelift.
  • Targeted improvements in performance and accessibility, addressing Core Web Vitals metrics to ensure the site performs optimally.
  • A refined deployment and hosting setup tailored to the university’s infrastructure.
  • Addressed structural translation inconsistencies and implemented proper support for right-to-left text flows (Arabic, Farsi).
  • Ensured compatibility and functional integration with existing systems like Qualtrics and Webforms under tight deadlines.

Results

The renewed site went live on time, well ahead of the Drupal 7 End of Life, avoiding potential shortcuts or compromises.

Core Web Vitals compliance was achieved, boosting both performance and accessibility of the platform for its diverse global audience.

The client was highly satisfied with the results. The partnership continues with ongoing support and maintenance, and discussions are underway to move toward full ADA compliance and an eventual Drupal 11 upgrade.

Additionally, our partner Brainsum’s work earned a nomination for the International Splash Awards in the “Education & Social / Community” category—attesting to both the quality and impact of the refreshed platform.
