Der Die Das
The Challenge
Every German learner struggles with learning the proper articles – der, die, or das – in German, as these often seem to be completely random, thus very hard to remember. Norbert, co-founder of Swiss Tomato, set out to find a solution that would help thousands learn the language using modern technology in a fun, interactive way, showing that there are rules to the difficult grammar and an entertaining way to practice.
The Solution
Swiss Tomato’s app development team created a mobile application that helps users learn which article belongs to which noun in a playful way.
Users can practice by topic and difficulty level. The game allows them to practice der, die, and das against beautiful backgrounds, such as the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Neuschwanstein Castle, or the Matterhorn. With a large dictionary of thousands of nouns, users can practice their skills.
The app also introduces the innovative Zoo of Rules concept, in which each rule is represented by an animal or object from a zoo.
.
Along with the app, Norbert has also published The Secret Rules of Der Die Das, a book that explains the rules using playful stories and characters, making German grammar more enjoyable and predictable
The Results
The Der Die Das app has over 100,000 downloads and has proudly received 2 awards:
- Top 0.2% of Featured Apple Apps as selected under the New Apps We Love section
- Winner of Best Mobile App in 2019 at the Swiss Meilleur du Web competition
The Book that accompanies the app is a bestseller on Amazon and has been translated into multiple languages.
